Description

Organized in 1855 as the Peoria & Ortmond Railway and Canal Company, the P&O was one of the prime rail companies for the Dominion of Mauretania, connecting most of the populace inland to the coast and, thusly, to the rest of the country.

In something akin to legend, the P&O was always invested in a trackage war with another line, the Trans Coastal Railway, whose claim to fame was running east to west to the P&O's north to south. Both fought for prime shipping markets, such as coal in the 1860s, timber in the 1880s, and major passenger trains upon the turn of the century. This rivalry may have been amusing in the newspapers, but it put both companies and the larger rail network in Mauretania under duress as route duplication and pricing wars impacted finances.

Upon the coming of the Second Great War in 1914, Mauretania found itself as a kind of supply hub for the war effort, given it's central location in the Old Sea. This conflict would strain many of the shipping and railway companies, impacting their finances, maintenance, and operations.

It's conclusion had left transport in much of Oceanic almost in shambles, but as other transport industries, namely shipping in particular, began to rebuild, the railways were in debt. The P&O and TCR had entered bankruptcy in 1920. Given their importance to the economy despite their bad state, the government moved to nationalize the two lines, beginning a trend that would culminate in the formation of Oceanic Railways in 1923.

Shown above is 4-4-0 #89 "Bournemouth", named after a village in the north of the island pre-nationalization. It was modernized in 1902 following a government regulation stipulating that all locomotives and rollingstock built after 1899 would have as standard air brakes and knuckle couplers.

It never entered service with Mauretania Railways, the branch of Oceanic Railways on the island, instead being donated to a railway museum given it's age.

I believe the proper term is Holy Shit.  GOOD WORK sir.  As usual I love the quartering of the cranks in proper fashion.  Your challenge for next time is to quarter the Stephensons valve gear along with them ;)
